JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - ETSU's Dylan Tritsch delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Seton Hall baseball team to a 4-3 defeat on Sunday in Johnson City, Tennessee.
The loss was the second straight of the walk-off variety for Seton Hall and keeps them still search of their first win of the 2013 season.
For the third straight game in this series, Seton Hall had trouble containing the long ball, and the Buccaneers jumped on top early because of it. Mason Hershey hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the second to give ETSU an early 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, East Tennessee State again capitalized with two outs. Chris Riopedre, Saturday's hero for ETSU, delivered an RBI single to left field to make the score 2-0 through four innings.
Seton Hall however, struck back for three runs in the top of the sixth. Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a ground out by Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.). With two outs, Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) and Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) hit back-to-back doubles to tie the score at two runs apiece. Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) then reached on a fielding error by ETSU's third baseman, which allowed Papaccio to score with the go-ahead run.
But in the bottom of the inning, Riopedre struck again. His solo home run off Seton Hall freshman Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) tied the game at three. Aside from that pitch, Cahill's collegiate debut was a successful one. The right-hander pitched two innings, giving up just two hits and didn't walk a batter.
Two more home runs for ETSU today gives them seven for the series against Seton Hall. The Pirates gave up only 13 home runs all season long in 2012.
Senior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) issued a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the 10th inning and was relieved by D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Meade, N.J.). The winning run was advanced to second base by a sacrifice bunt, and to third base by a passed ball. With two outs, Tritsch singled to left field to plate the winning run.
Terhune pitched two and two thirds of an inning, struck out two and walked three, but was issued the 10th inning's earned run.
Senior Ricky Mangione (Orange, Conn.) started the game for Seton Hall and gave up one run over two and two thirds of an inning.
Boyd, Genovese and Kalamar all collected a pair of hits for the Pirates.
In addition to Cahill, freshman Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) made his collegiate debut. The outfielder pinch ran in the ninth inning.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday when they head to the west coast for a seven-game stretch. The Pirates will play a weekend series at San Diego State, a mid-week game vs. San Diego, and a series the following weekend at Pepperdine. First pitch on Friday at San Diego State is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET.
