SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team exploded for 17 runs and 19 hits in a 17-7 victory over Manhattan on Saturday, the second day of the 2013 Strike Out Cancer Tournament in South Orange.
Seton Hall (5-10) left little doubt early scoring eight runs in the first inning, its highest run total for a single inning this season. In all, 12 batters came to the plate and eight collected hits. The first three Pirates batters, Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.), Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) and Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) reached via bunt. Granite reached on an error, while Selden and Kalamar reached via bunt single. With the bases loaded, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) delivered a two-RBI double down the left field line. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single, and Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) joined the hit parade with an RBI double down the right field line to make the score 4-0. With one out, Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a wild pitch. On the play, Annunziata scored with the Pirates' fifth run. Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) then singled to right field advancing Genovese to third. With two outs, Granite singled to left, scoring Genovese. Selden then delivered a single, aided by a throwing error by Manhattan's pitcher, which scored runs seven and eight for Seton Hall.
Cruising along, the Pirates scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI walk by Falconi and an RBI single by Genovese.
With Seton Hall ahead 10-0, the teams engaged in a 13-run, hour-long sixth inning. Manhattan struck for seven runs in the top of the inning, cutting the Pirates lead to 10-7, but Seton Hall bounced back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to boost their lead back to nine at 16-7.
Lost in the offensive onslaught was the fine pitching of Seton Hall starting pitcher Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.). The 6-foot-5 left-hander scattered just two hits in five shutout innings and earned the victory. He also struck out four and walked one.
Granite and Selden, batting first and second in the order, both reached base four times. Granite finished 2-for-4 with a team-best four RBIs, three runs scored, a triple and a pair of walks. Selden went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. Papaccio finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
The 2013 Strike Out Cancer Tournament will finish tomorrow (Sunday) with another double-header. Manhattan and Massachusetts will square off at noon, while Seton Hall and Massachusetts will take the field at 3:00 p.m.
