HOUSTON, TEXAS – Junior Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 4-for-6 with three RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team soundly defeated #24 Houston, 15-1, on Sunday to win the three-game series. Granite reached base five times as part of Seton Hall’s 15-run, 18-hit offensive barrage. The Pirates’ center fielder also scored three runs and stole his team-leading 23rd base of the season. Senior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) turned in another fine start. The 6-foot-5 left-hander earned the victory with 5.1 innings of one run baseball. Three relievers combined to keep Houston off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Seton Hall got on the scoreboard early. Granite walked, stole second and advanced to third on the Houston catcher’s throwing error. Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Granite with the game’s first run. In the third, Granite’s legs helped produce the Pirates’ second run. With one out, Granite slapped a double down the left field line past a drawn in third baseman. A throwing error by the left fielder allowed Granite to advance to third, and a throwing error by the third baseman allowed him to score, extending the Pirates lead to 2-0. The Seton Hall bats broke out in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) singled to right field to lead off. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) walked and Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Then three straight Pirates singled, resulting in three more runs. RBIs by Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.), Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) and Granite gave Seton Hall a 5-0 advantage. In the top of the fifth inning, senior Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) led off with his first home run of the season, a blast over the left field fence to give Seton Hall a six-run lead. If the game was in question before the sixth inning, it wasn’t afterwards. The Pirates exploded for seven runs on seven hits to take a commanding 13-0 lead. The big blast came in the form of a bases clearing, three-run double over the head of Houston’s center fielder off the bat of Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.). The victory is the third over a ranked team for Seton Hall this year and improves the Pirates to 18-15 overall. Seton Hall has now won three straight weekend series. Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, April 17 when it returns to Owen T. Carroll Field to host Iona. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
