SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – A trio of seniors keyed an early-inning offensive outburst for the Seton Hall baseball team on Tuesday night as the Pirates powered past Rider, 9-2, behind seven runs in the first two frames. Seniors Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.), Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) provided the spark from the plate, either scoring or driving in all seven runs in the first two innings. After the first two Pirates were retired in the bottom half of the first, Kalamar got the two-out rally started with a single to right field, one of three hits for him on the day. Papaccio and Genovese each followed with singles of their own and the Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead. With Papaccio standing on third and Genovese on first, sophomore Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) connected for a fourth-consecutive single for The Hall, bringing in Papaccio and moving Genovese to third. As freshman Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) was in the box looking to keep the rally going, Grimm and Genovese orchestrated a double steal as the sophomore beat the throw down to second and Genovese took advantage of the opportunity to nab home and give SHU a 3-0 advantage heading into the second. In the Pirates’ second turn at bat, Kalamar had the chance to hit with two runners in scoring position, following a single from Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) and a single and a stolen base by Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.). Kalamar capitalized, lacing a base hit to center that scored Sullivan and moved Selden to third. After Kalamar stole second, the fourth of seven steals for Seton Hall on the night, Papaccio got a hold of one and muscled it into the gap in left-center, bringing in both runners and ending up with a triple as the ball carried to the wall. The next hitter up, Genovese brought his fellow middle infielder in with an RBI groundout, extending the Pirates’ lead to seven runs. The early offensive flurry was more than enough for freshman Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.), who in his third start of the season, allowed just two runs on three hits in five full innings. From there, Conor Krauss (Randolph, N.J.), Rick Mangione (Orange, Conn.) and Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) combined for four shutout innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen. Krauss fanned three in two innings after relieving Burum to start the sixth and Gilbert struck out two to nail down the win in a perfect ninth. Burum improved to 3-0 with the victory, matching senior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) for the team-high in wins to this point in the year. Through his first 22.1 collegiate innings, Burum has allowed only seven runs while limiting opposing hitters to a .203 average. His 1.21 ERA is best among Pirate pitchers that have logged at least 10 innings. Genovese helped add insurance in the fourth, plating Kalamar with a sacrifice fly for his third and final RBI of the game. Papaccio reached base four times, going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs. The veteran shortstop is now tied for the team-lead with 32 hits and finished a home run shy of the cycle. The Pirates (12-13) will be right back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 3 when they welcome the Princeton Tigers to Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
