PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) had a no-hitter through 7.1 innings and the Seton Hall baseball team held on for a 5-3 victory at Rutgers on Sunday, winning the series, two-games-to one. The 6-foot-5 left-hander was taken out after giving up his first hit, which also ended the shutout. Terhune finished with 7.1 innings, one earned run on just one hit, with two walks and four strikeouts. Offensively, Seton Hall had a big opportunity right out of the gate. The Pirates loaded the bases with only one out, but an inning-ending double play ended the threat. The Pirates offense finally broke through in the top of the fifth. John Beaubien (Livingston, N.J.) singled to lead off the inning and was successfully sacrificed to second by Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.). With two outs, Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled through the right side scoring Beaubien with the game’s first run and moved to second on the throw home. After Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) was hit by a pitch, Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) walked, but the fourth ball was a wild pitch and Granite was able to score from second to give Seton Hall a 2-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Pirates broke the game open. Senior Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) led off with a double to left field and was advanced to third on a single by Granite. Selden followed with a single to left, which scored Sullivan, and when the left fielder’s throw sailed wide, Granite came in to score with the Pirates’ fourth run. Kalamar delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring Selden and extending the Pirates’ advantage to 5-0. With one out in the eighth, and Terhune’s no-hitter still intact, Charlie Law singled to left field to score Jeff Melillo with the first run of the afternoon for the Scarlet Knights and end Terhune’s bid for history. Junior Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) came on in relief and, despite giving up a pair of runs, was able to get the final five outs to preserve the Pirates’ victory. Granite and Selden each had two hits for Seton Hall. Granite reached base three times and was 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Selden was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday for a mid-week game at Wagner. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
