Gilbert Named Pitcher of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Teammate Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) was added to the conference’s Weekly Honor Roll. Gilbert saw action in all three Seton Hall games vs. USF last weekend, and was a key reason why the Pirates swept. During the first game of Friday’s double-header, Gilbert entered the game in the eighth inning and recorded the final four USF outs to preserve a 3-2 Pirates victory. The right-hander earned the win because Seton Hall drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. In the nightcap, Gilbert pitched a scoreless ninth inning to ensure a 5-4 Seton Hall win for his third save of the season. Finally, he returned the following day to close out USF again and earn his fourth save of the year and second in as many days. Annunziata led Seton Hall with a .417 batting average in Seton Hall’s three games last week. The Pirate first baseman hit safely in all three games and went 2-for-4 in games two and three of the series. His two RBIs in Friday’s second game led the team. Annunziata now has his season batting average up to an impressive .321. Gilbert is the second Pirate to earn BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) earned the distinction on April 29. Annunziata becomes the 10th Pirate to land on the Weekly Honor Roll this season. St. John’s Frank Schwindel of St. John’s was named Player of the Week. Those joining Annunziata on the Honor Roll include: Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser, Pittsburgh’s Casey Roche, Rutgers’ Rob Smorol and St. John’s James Lomangino. The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, May 14 for their final non-conference game of the season. Seton Hall will face Michigan at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The game is a closed event, open only to invited family members of the student-athletes.
