CLEARWATER, FLA. – The Seton Hall baseball team led 5-1, but Pittsburgh rallied and eliminated the Pirates from the 2013 BIG EAST Championship with a 7-6 victory in 12 innings on Friday. With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Pittsburgh’s John Peluso walked and stole second. Ronald Sucre followed with a double to left center, scoring Peluso with the winning run.
Seton Hall looked impressive offensively early on, and jumped on Pittsburgh starter Rhys Aldenhoven from the start with runs in each of the first three innings. In the top of the first inning, Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with a walk and was bunted to second by Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.). With two outs, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to center, scoring Granite with the game’s first run. In the second, the Pirates followed the same script as the first. Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) led off with a single and was bunted to second by Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.). With two outs, freshman Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) singled hard up the middle to score Selden and extend the Pirates’ lead to 2-0. The Pirates turned their offense up another notch in the top of the third. With one out, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) and Annunziata hit back-to-back singles. Senior Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) followed with a double high off the right centerfield wall to score both base runners and give Seton Hall a 4-0 lead. The Pirates would move two more runners into scoring position with just one out, but left them stranded. Pittsburgh broke through with a run off Seton Hall starter Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) in the bottom of the third with back-to-back hits to lead off the inning. The second, an RBI double by Stephen Vranka, cut the Pirates’ lead to 4-1. In the fourth, the Pirates started a rally with two outs. After the first two batters were retired, Weigel singled and Papaccio followed with an RBI double to right centerfield that Pitt right fielder Casey Roche lost in the sun. Seton Hall led, 5-1, through five. In the bottom of the sixth, Prevost started to tire and Pittsburgh jumped on the opportunity. The first four batters reached base, including an RBI triple by Sam Parente and an RBI single by John Peluso, to cut the Pirates’ lead to 5-3. With runners on first and second and no outs for Pittsburgh, Seton Hall brought in Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.). With his first pitch, Lopez got a pop out in foul territory, and with his second pitch, he induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the Pittsburgh threat. The Pirates got a run back in the top of the seventh. With one out, Selden singled and went from first to third on Sullivan’s single. Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) followed with a perfect bunt up the first base line to squeeze home Selden with the Pirates’ sixth run. But it all unraveled for Lopez in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, Parente doubled to left center field, which scored both base-runners and cut the Pirates lead to 6-5. John Peluso followed with a grounder to second that Chiaradio couldn’t handle, and Parente scored with the tying run. From there a pair of closers turned in impressive performances. Pittsburgh closer Joe Harvey entered with two outs in the seventh inning and proceeded to pitch 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Seton Hall closer Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) entered with two outs in the seventh and pitched five innings, while giving up just two hits and one run. He also struck out five. Each of the Panthers’ last four runs of the game were driven in with two outs. Seton Hall fell despite pounding out 17 hits. The Pirates did however, leave 16 men on base. Three Pirates recorded three hits, Weigel, Kalamar, and Papaccio, who reached base four times.
