CINCINNATI, OHIO – Junior Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Seton Hall baseball team to a 9-8 victory at Cincinnati on Friday. The victory is the Pirates’ seventh straight and 11th in their last 12 games. Senior Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) doubled to left field to lead off the 10th, but appeared destined to be stranded there after the next two Pirates made outs. Hamlin followed with a bloop single to score the go-ahead run. Senior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) turned in another strong start, going seven innings, while giving up just two earned runs and striking out three in a no decision. The game was scoreless through five innings until the Pirates broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) walked, and Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) successfully sacrificed him to second. After Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) reached on a fielder’s choice, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) flew out to deep centerfield to score Granite with the game’s first run. Genovese followed with a single to score Kalamar and extend the Pirates’ lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Cincinnati got both runs back on a two-out, two-RBI double. The Pirates offense exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh. The big hits came off the bats of Weigel and Papaccio. Weigel delivered a two-RBI single and Papaccio added a bases-clearing, three-RBI double. When the smoke finally cleared, the Pirates held a commanding 8-2 lead. But the Bearcats roared back in the bottom of the eighth with six runs off Pirates’ reliever Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.). Seton Hall closer Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) took the mound and got the final out, but not before Cincinnati had tied the game at eight. Gilbert got the win with 2.1 innings of two-hit relief. Thanks in part to a pair of double plays, he faced the minimum over the final two innings. Papaccio went 1-for-4 with a team-best four RBIs. Granite, Kalamar and Genovese all reached base three times in the Pirates’ extra-innings victory. The Pirates offense continued its second half onslaught. The Pirates’ 11 hits mark the 19th time in the last 20 games they’ve collected at least nine hits. Seton Hall will resume its three-game series at Cincinnati tomorrow (Saturday). First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
