SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall’s Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) has signed a free agent contract with Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels. Terhune becomes the fifth member of the 2013 Pirates to sign a professional contract with an MLB franchise. After spending much of his time as a reliever in the prior three seasons, Terhune became one of the most dominant weekend starters in the BIG EAST in 2013. A First Team All-NJCBA selection, he led Seton Hall’s regular starters with a 2.33 ERA, tied for fifth-best in the BIG EAST, and a .218 opponent batting average, tied for fourth-best. The 6-foot-5 left-hander pitched as primarily the Pirates’ Saturday starter and tied for the team lead with seven wins. On May 6, Terhune was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his first career complete-game, limiting Cincinnati to just one earned run, while striking out a career-high 10 batters with just one walk. The final start of Terhune’s collegiate career was a complete game, three-hitter against St. John’s on the second day of the BIG EAST Tournament, Seton Hall’s final victory of the 2013 season. He gave up just four earned runs over his last four starts of the season, which included two complete games (33 innings total). Prior to 2013, Terhune was effective as both a starter and reliever. A two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, he made 16 appearances and 10 starters in Seton Hall’s BIG EAST Championship season of 2011. That season, he pitched to a 3.86 ERA and saw action in two of the Pirates’ three games at the NCAA College Station Regional. Terhune is the fifth member of the 2013 Pirates to sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball franchise. On June 7, Seton Hall closer Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was selected in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by Minnesota, while right-handed pitcher Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round. The following day, centerfielder Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) became the second Pirate to be chosen by Minnesota. He was picked in the 14th round. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) was selected in the 18th round by the Chicago Cubs.
