WASHINGTON, PA. – Seton Hall’s Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) has signed a free agent contract with the independent Frontier League’s Washington Wild Things. Kalamar is the sixth member of the 2013 Pirates to sign a professional contract.
Batting primarily in the third place in the Pirates’ batting order, Kalamar started all 56 games for Seton Hall in 2013. A Second Team All-NJCBA selection, the right-fielder belted a career-high .299 to go with 43 RBIs and 26 walks, both second-most on the team. Kalamar hit six triples, tied for second-most in the BIG EAST Conference, and stole a career-high 23 stolen bases. A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, he had three hits, two RBIs and a stolen base vs. Pittsburgh in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament, his final collegiate game.
Kalamar played in 146 games in his four-year Seton Hall career and batted .273 with three home runs and 70 RBIs. In 2012, he was named BIG EAST Player of the Week following his four-hit, which included a grand slam, six-RBI game at Monmouth on April 24.
Kalamar is the sixth member of the 2013 Pirates to sign a professional contract. On June 7, Seton Hall closer Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was selected in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by Minnesota, while right-handed pitcher Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round. The following day, centerfielder Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) became the second Pirate to be chosen by Minnesota. He was picked in the 14th round. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) was selected in the 18th round by the Chicago Cubs. Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels.
