SECAUCAS, N.J. – Seton Hall junior Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was selected in the seventh round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Gilbert was the 200th selection overall. The dominant right-hander excelled at Seton Hall for three seasons in multiple roles, before establishing himself as one of the top closers in the BIG EAST Conference. Through his first two seasons in South Orange, Gilbert made 16 starts and 18 relief appearances. As a freshman, Gilbert was instrumental in helping Seton Hall to the 2011 BIG EAST Championship. One of his top performances of the season came as a starter in the conference tournament. Gilbert tossed 5.1 innings of one-run baseball in Seton Hall’s 12-2 victory, which eliminated top-seed Connecticut. In 2012, he was named BIG EAST and NJCBA Pitcher of the week following his first career complete-game and shutout in a four-hit, six-strikeout gem against Notre Dame. As a junior, Gilbert was converted to the teams’ closer and dominated the ninth inning. Named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team, he led the conference with 25 games finished and tied for sixth in the BIG EAST with six saves. In a particularly productive weekend, he earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors for a win and two saves in Seton Hall’s weekend sweep of #20 USF. Named NJCBA Fireman of the Year, Gilbert pitched to a career-low 2.40 ERA and struck out 49 batters in 48.2 innings pitched. Later in the day, teammate Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) was selected in the 10th round (301st overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies. On Saturday, Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) joined Gilbert as a Minnesota draft pick. He was selected in the 14th round. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 18th round. The four Seton Hall selections are the most in a single draft since six were picked in 1997.
