CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Former Seton Hall baseball player Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was promoted to the Minnesota Twins' Class A Affiliate, the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
The former Pirates closer was the first of four members of the 2013 Seton Hall baseball team to be drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Gilbert was selected in the seventh round, 200th overall, on June 7 and was originally assigned to the franchise's Rookie League affiliate, the Elizabethton Twins.
Gilbert was dominant in Elizabethton, giving up just one hit in five appearances out of the Twins' bullpen. The right-hander didn't allow a run and struck out seven batters, while walking just one. In his first professional appearance on June 28, Gilbert also earned his first win after a scoreless inning against the Princeton Rays. His last appearance in Elizabethton may have been his most impressive, two innings of hitless baseball vs. the Danville Braves on July 20.
Gilbert excelled at Seton Hall for three seasons in multiple roles, before establishing himself as one of the top closers in the BIG EAST Conference. Named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team, he led the conference with 25 games finished and tied for sixth in the BIG EAST with six saves. In one particularly productive weekend, he earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors for a win and two saves in Seton Hall's weekend sweep of #20 USF. Named NJCBA Fireman of the Year, Gilbert pitched to a career-low 2.40 ERA and struck out 49 batters in 48.2 innings pitched.
