MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Freshman Lloyd Jefferson Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines) won the 2014 Philippine Amateur Open Golf Championship on Thursday. The young Pirate phenom, at home in his native country during winter break, won the four-round event by 11 strokes.
Despite a 4-over-par, 76, in Thursday's final round, Go easily won the tournament due to a dominating first three rounds. The Seton Hall freshman shot an even-72 in rounds one and two, and fired a 1-under-par, 71, in round three to open a commanding lead. Go possessed the only sub-par score in round three and was able to cruise through round four to the large victory.
The par-72 tournament was held on the East Course of Wack Wack Golf & Country Club in Manila, Philippines. A field of 70 golfers began the tournament with the cut reducing the field to 50 after 18 holes and a final 30 after 54 holes.
In only his first semester at Seton Hall, Go immediately made a mark on the Pirates' record books. Go completed a historic fall season for the Pirates on Oct. 21, notching his second sub-par tournament of the fall with a 5-under-par, 69-70-139, to place third among 75 individual golfers at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate. His tournament score of 139 tied Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer Eugene Smith for the lowest two-round, par-72 score in Pirates history. Furthermore, his 5-under-par score is tied for the third-lowest against par in history. Go also becomes only the 10th golfer in Seton Hall history to record multiple sub-par tournaments in a career. He shot 1-under-par at The Doc Gimmler earlier this fall.
Go was Seton Hall's low scorer in four of his first five career tournaments.
