PHOENIX, ARIZ. - Seton Hall graduate Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) has signed a professional baseball contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise.
The 2013 graduate went undrafted out of college, but has spent the last two seasons with the Washington Wild Things of the independent Frontier League. Last summer, he batted .300 with nine home runs, 48 RBIs and 17 stolen bases while leading the Wild Things to a playoff berth.
Batting primarily in the third position in the Pirates' batting order, Kalamar started all 56 games for Seton Hall as a senior in 2013. A Second Team All-NJCBA selection, the right-fielder belted a career-high .299 to go with 43 RBIs and 26 walks, both second-most on the team. Kalamar hit six triples, tied for second-most in the BIG EAST Conference, and stole a career-high 23 stolen bases. A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, he had three hits, two RBIs and a stolen base vs. Pittsburgh in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament, his final collegiate game.
Kalamar becomes the sixth member of the 2013 Pirates to sign a professional contract with an affiliate of Major League Baseball. Brian Gilbert and Zack Granite were drafted by the Minnesota Twins. Giuseppe Papaccio was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Jon Prosinski was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and Greg Terhune signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels.
