GRASONVILLE, MD. - The Seton Hall men's golf team will open the spring season with three rounds of golf at the Whiting-Turner Towson Invitational at Prospect Bay Country Club, March 30 - April 1.
Twenty-two teams will compete for three rounds over three days on the par-72, 6,659-yard course. In addition to Seton Hall and two Towson teams, participating schools include: California University of PA, Central Connecticut, Colgate, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, George Washington, VCU, Hofstra, Iona, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Long Island, Northern Colorado, Rider, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, Siena, St. Bonaventure and St. Peter's.
The course, long known for excellent greens, has two distinct nines. The front is open and more affected by breezes off Eastern Bay. It is highlighted by the 4th hole, a 556 yard par five, which features a large two-tiered green and the 6th, a 400 yard par four, sporting out-of bounds right and water on the left. The back nine is tree-lined, winding along the perimeter of Talisman Farm. The course is known for its strong finishing holes, considered by some to be as good as anything on the Eastern Shore. The 17th, a 428 yard par four, plays into the prevailing wind and demands an accurate tee shot in order to have a chance at par. It's followed up by our signature hole, the 590 yard par five 18th. The large, almost "island" green, is well-protected by four bunkers and water front and right. A par on the 18th is always a great way to finish the round.
Seton Hall has seen success at this tournament in the past. As recently as 2012, the Pirates won the team event in a playoff. They shot a 7-over-par, 294-284-293-871. Former Pirate John Dawson Neufeld tied the program record for lowest single round on a par-72 course with a 5-under-par, 67, in the event's second round. In 2009, Seton Hall shot a 282 in the second round, its lowest single-round on a par-72 course in program history.
Last year, Seton Hall placed eight among a field of 24 schools with a 74-over-par, 313-307-318-938. William & Mary won the event at 24-over-par. Cory Wilson (Newton, N.J.) led the Pirates with a 16-over-par, 79-76-77-232. He finished in a tie for 24th place among 123 individual golfers. JT Harper (Pebble Beach, Calif.) finished one stroke behind Wilson with a 17-over-par, 77-78-78-233.
