CLEARWATER, FLA. - The Seton Hall University softball lost to Maine 4-1 in its final game at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Sunday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla.
Junior Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) started and struck out five but gave up three earned runs on five hits in four innings of work to fall to 2-3 overall. Sophomore Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) came up with an RBI base hit for the Pirates.
Seton Hall had the early lead against the Black Bears, manufacturing a run in the bottom of the second. Junior Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) drew a one-out walk and swiped second base to move into scoring position where Rabbetts brought her home with a base hit, SHU's second of the game.
Maine scored in nearly identical fashion in the next half inning as Felicia Lennon led off with a walk, took second base, and came home on a Dagmar Ralphs base hit. The Pirates would see just two more base runners and pick up one more base hit over their final five at bats, while Maine brought what proved to be the winning runs across the plate with a two-out rally in the fourth.
Kristen Kolosy walked and moved up to third on a Lennon base knock. Emj Fogel pinch hit with two on and two out and managed to bring both runs home with a base hit.
Junior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) relieved DeStaso in the circle to throw the final three innings, giving up just one run late in the game while relinquishing four hits with a strikeout.
Sophomore Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.) and DeStaso both went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Seton Hall continues its 10-day Spring Break trip in Clearwater with a single game against Pennsylvania on Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m., before resuming tournament competition at the City of Clearwater Invitational next Friday-Sunday.
