BETHESDA, MD. - Senior Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) hit a grand slam and Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) pitched seven strong innings as the Seton Hall baseball team downed Georgetown, 9-3, in the series finale on Saturday.Hamlin finished the day a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and four RBIs. Cahill pitched seven innings and gave up just one earned run to improve to 7-1 on the season. He also struck out five batters and didn't issue a walk.
Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) also had a huge offensive day, going 3-for-5 with a career-high four RBIs and two more stolen bases.
Georgetown (13-22, 1-8) struck first on Saturday pushing a run across on Cahill in the bottom of the first. Cahill was the victim of Hoya small ball as an infield hit, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly played the run.
With one out in the top of the second, Seton Hall's offense got started. The Pirates received back-to-back-to-back singles by Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.), D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) and Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.). That's when Hamlin followed with a towering grand slam well over the left field fence to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Ruhlman walked to lead off and was successfully bunted to second base by Selden. Hamlin singled to left field and Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jenkins followed with a two-RBI single just two feet inside the right field line to extend the Seton Hall advantage to 6-1.
In the sixth inning, Jenkins singled to center field to drive in Chiaradio with the Pirates' seventh run.
As if Cahill's masterful pitching wasn't enough for Georgetown to overcome, the Hoyas base-running gaffes ensured that offense would be difficult to come by. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Georgetown began the inning with a single and a double. Jake Kuzbel hit a grounder to Annunziata at first. Annunziata stepped on the bag for the out, and noticed that Eric Webber was heading to third, but the runner on third, Joseph Biaklowski, hadn't broken for home. Annunziata threw to Ruhlman, who ran down Webber for the second out. Biaklowski then stepped off the third base bag, presumably thinking the inning was over, and was tagged out by Ruhlman to complete the inning-ending triple play.
Boyd topped off the Pirates' scoring with his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field to give Seton Hall a 9-1 lead.
In the strange stat of the game, Chiaradio was hit by a pitch three times.
Seton Hall (27-8, 3-3) will return to action on Tuesday, April 22 when it returns to Owen T. Carroll Field for a mid-week game with instate rival Monmouth. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
