BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Sophomore Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) pitched seven innings of two-run baseball, but it wasn't enough as Creighton held on to defeat the Seton Hall baseball team, 2-1, on Saturday.
With the loss, Seton Hall will now play Xavier in a second game on Saturday afternoon. The winner will play Creighton tomorrow afternoon for the BIG EAST Championship. The loser will be eliminated.
Creighton struck for its only two runs off Cahill in the top of the third inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Cahill gave up three straight hits, a single, a triple and a double before striking out the Bluejays' Nicky Lopez to end the inning.
Trailing 2-0, the Pirates got one back in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) tripled down the right field line to lead off and Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) singled up the middle to cut the Creighton lead in half. With Jenkins on second and just one out however, Seton Hall couldn't get the tying run across as Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) flew out to center field and Sal Annunziata grounded out to the shortstop.
Meanwhile, Creighton's Bryan Sova went the distance to earn the victory. Sova, Creighton's closer for most of the season, gave up just one run on five hits with five strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.
Cahill takes the hard-luck loss after having just one bad inning. He falls to 10-2. Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) pitched well in relief, tossing the last two innings for the Pirates without allowing a hit.
