SECAUCAS, N.J. - Seton Hall Conor Krauss (Randolph, N.J.) was selected in the 20th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Krauss joins former teammate Jose Lopez as a member of the Cincinnati organization. Lopez was selected by the Reds in the sixth round. Josh Prevost was the first member of the 2014 Pirates to be drafted. He was selected in the fifth round by the New York Mets.
In three years at Seton Hall, Krauss has been effective as both a starter and reliever. In 2014, he served as the Pirates' primary closer, pitching to a 1-1 record with a 3.54 ERA and four saves. Early in the season, Krauss started against Manhattan and gave up just one hit over four innings in Seton Hall's 8-0 victory. His final save of the season was a perfect outing against Villanova in which he preserved a 3-1 Pirates' victory, retiring all three batters he faced, while striking out two.
The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 32 batters in just 28 innings pitched in 2014. Krauss has struck out more batters than innings pitched for his career in South Orange.
In the 2013 MLB Draft, four Pirates were selected. Former Seton Hall closer Brian Gilbert was the earliest picked, chosen by the Minnesota Twins in the seventh round.
