CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall baseball team lost in the series finale at North Carolina, 9-5, on Saturday.
The loss drops the Pirates to 0-3 and completes the UNC sweep.
Seton Hall starter Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) takes the loss after 4.1 innings of four-run baseball.
For a second straight game, Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first. In the top of the first inning, Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) reached on an error by the UNC second baseman. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) followed with a single. After a double steal, and a strikeout, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) scored Weigel on an RBI ground out to short.
In the fourth inning, North Carolina struck for two runs with two outs. After retiring the first two batters, Pacillo gave up back-to-back singles, followed by a two-RBI double to left-center field by Joe Dudek to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 advantage.
The following inning, Pacillo loaded the bases with one out via a pair of singles and a walk. Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) entered the game and gave up a two-RBI single to UNC's Tyler Ramirez to give North Carolina a pair of insurance runs, 4-1.
North Carolina (3-0) added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings before blowing the game open with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Seton Hall's offense showed a little life at the end of the game, bursting for four runs in the top of the ninth. The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs and Boyd followed with a bases clearing double to cut the Tar Heel lead to 9-4. After a ground out, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) collected his first hit and RBI of his career with a single up the middle that scored Boyd. But the four-run deficit is as close as the Pirates got.
Freshmen pitchers Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) made their collegiate debuts with an inning apiece.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, Feb. 20 for the first of a three-game series at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
