MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Seton Hall baseball team finished play at the University of Virginia Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. with a 3-1 loss to Hartford in the nightcap of a double-header on Saturday.
The Pirates' offense stalled after the third inning with only one Pirate reaching base after they scored their lone run.
Hartford starting pitcher Sam McKay threw eight innings and gave up only one run to earn the victory. Pirates' starter Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) pitched well, but didn't go past four innings. The right-hander gave up one earned run on three hits over four innings, but walked five batters.
Hartford (3-3) got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Cahill gave up a double down the left field line which plated the game's first run. Hartford proceeded to load the bases afterward, but Cahill was able to escape with just one run scored.
Seton Hall (1-5) had a golden opportunity for a big inning in the top of the third, but had to settle for only tying the game at one. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) led off with a walk and both Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) and Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) followed with bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) grounded into a double-play, but Falconi scored with the tying run. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) flew out to right field to end the threat and keep Martin stranded at third.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hartford scratched across a single run against reliever Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) to take the lead. Meanwhile, McKay continued to put up zeros. After surrendering the Pirates' lone run in the third inning, he retired 15 straight batters.
Hartford added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.).
For both Leon and Testani, their runs were their first surrendered of the season. Leon took today's loss.
Seton Hall will return to action weather permitting on Wednesday, March 4 vs. Manhattan for its home opener at Owen T. Carroll Field. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
