MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Seton Hall baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to #1 Virginia, on Saturday in the first game of a split opponent double-header.
Sophomore Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) takes the loss after going four innings and giving up two earned runs.
Seton Hall (1-4) had a good opportunity to take an early lead right out of the gate. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) slapped a one-out double to left-center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) followed with a walk, but both runners were ultimately stranded.
In the second and third innings, it was Virginia that couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but Pacillo induced a pop up and two ground balls to wriggle out of the jam unscathed. In the third, Virginia led off with back-to-back singles, and the runners were sacrificed into scoring position. A wild pitch plated the first run of the game, but despite loading the bases again, Pacillo was able to limit the damage to just one run.
Virginia (9-0) left nine men on base through the first four innings.
In the top of the fifth inning, Seton Hall finally broke through offensively. Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.). Weigel grounded out, which advanced Martin to third. Martin came in to score on a wild pitch by Virginia starter Connor Jones to tie the game at one.
The tie didn't last long however, as Virginia's Matt Thaiss sent a 3-1 offering by Pacillo over the right field wall for a solo home run.
In the sixth, Virginia added two insurance runs off reliever Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.). Neither of the Cavaliers' RBI singles were hit particularly hard, but found holes in the infield and twice allowed the UVA runner to score from second.
Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) pitched well in relief for the Pirates. The freshman gave up just one hit over two innings of work.
