PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. - Senior D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) and junior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) combined for nine RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team downed Lehigh, 13-6, for its third straight win as part of the Snowbird Classic on Friday.
Ruhlman went 4-for-5 with two doubles, five RBIs and his team-leading second home run of the season. Jenkins followed up his five-hit performance on Wednesday by going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and four RBIs.
For a third consecutive game, the Pirates' bats broke out early and often. After taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Seton Hall offense erupted for six runs as 10 men came to the plate in the second. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored when Jenkins singled through the right side. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with an infield single. After the Pirates pulled off a double-steal, Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) singled home Weigel, and Falconi scored as Lehigh's shortstop's throw was wide of first base. Already leading 5-0, Ruhlman followed with a three-run home run to extend the Pirates' advantage to 8-0.
In the third inning, the Pirates tacked on two more runs. Another fielding error by the Lehigh shortstop allowed Jenkins to score, and with two outs, Ruhlman's second double of the game drove in Falconi to give The Hall a commanding 10-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) was cruising along, until he ran into trouble in the middle innings. Lehigh got two runs back in the top of the fourth, three runs in the top of the fifth and a single run in the sixth as Mountain Hawks scored six straight runs to make it a game again at 10-6.
Prendergast settled however, and the Pirates tacked on three more runs late to again take a sizeable advantage.
With the win, Prendergast improves to 2-1. The right-hander pitched 7.1 innings and gave up four earned runs. He also struck out a career-high seven batters and walked just one.
Senior Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) gave up just one hit over the final 1.2 innings of the game to ensure the win for Prendergast.
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, March 14 as it faces Western Michigan as part of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
