NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week on Monday. Teammate Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
In four games last week, Weigel had little trouble getting on base. The Pirates' leadoff hitter batted .462 and posted an on-base percentage of .562. In all four games, Weigel recorded at least one hit and reached base at least twice. In Wednesday's rout of Saint Peter's, the junior went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. During the Pirates' shutout of Connecticut on Sunday, Weigel drove in two of Seton Hall's three runs. Weigel is currently tied for the BIG EAST lead in both walks and stolen bases. He is the second straight Pirate to be named Player of the Week as D.J. Ruhlman earned the recognition last week.
In most weeks, McCarthy's performance would have been worthy of winning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. In only his third career start, the right-handed pitcher threw a complete-game shutout of Connecticut on Saturday to improve to 2-1 on the season. McCarthy surrendered just six hits, struck out five batters and didn't issue a single walk. The freshman has now given up just two earned runs in 24.2 innings for a miniscule 0.73 earned run average, which leads the conference.
St. John's Alex Katz was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. Those joining McCarthy on the Honor Roll include: Butler's Garrett Christman, Creighton's Harrison Crawford, Georgetown's Chase Bushor and Xavier's Ethan Schmidt.
Weigel, McCarthy and the rest of the Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, March 24 as they host Princeton at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
