SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team received strong pitching a timely hitting to down Lafayette, 8-3, on Wednesday for its eighth win in 10 games.
Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) was only scheduled to pitch four innings, and earned the victory by shutting out the Leopards and giving up just three hits. The senior struck out four and didn't issue a walk to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) came on in relief of Elia and pitched the next four innings. He gave up one earned run on three hits.
Offensively, the Pirates banged out 11 hits with Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.), Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) all reaching base three times. Jenkins had a team high three hits, while Poduslenko had two runs scored and a two-RBI triple.
Seton Hall (9-10) got on the scoreboard right away with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Jenkins singled and Grimm was hit by a pitch. After a double-steal, D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) drove in Jenkins with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Pirates had their big inning and added three insurance runs. Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a hard single by Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.). With one out, Poduslenko delivered a triple, which cleared the bases to put The Hall in front, 3-0. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Poduslenko and extend the Pirates' lead to 4-0.
After Lafayette got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth, the Pirates added two more in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI single by Weigel to put Seton Hall comfortably in front, 6-1.
Weigel finished the day 2-for-4 a sacrifice fly and a team-high three RBIs.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday as it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
