PREVIEW
Seton Hall enters this weekend just one game under .500 after starting the season 1-8. The Pirates dropped two of three games to Connecticut at Owen T. Carroll Field last weekend, but bounced back with a pair of victories during mid-week games. Last Saturday, Zach Prendergast found himself on the losing end of a second 1-0 game this season. The sophomore pitched seven innings of one-run baseball, but was saddled with the hard-luck loss. The Hall bounced back on Sunday behind starter Shane McCarthy, who pitched a complete-game shutout in only his third career start. The Pirates won 3-0 and McCarthy improved to 2-1 on the season. In the second game of Sunday's double-header, Seton Hall fell, 6-3. Kyle Grimm went 3-for-4 in the loss. For his efforts, Zack Weigel was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, and McCarthy was named to the Honor Roll. On Tuesday, Seton Hall scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Princeton, 6-5. On Wednesday, the Pirates downed Lafayette, 8-3. The Pirates now take on Fairleigh Dickinson in a split location series. The Pirates will host games on Friday and Sunday, but will travel to Teaneck on Saturday.
THINGS TO KNOW
MID-WEEK WINS
Seton Hall improved to a perfect 5-0 in mid-week games with victories over Princeton and Lafayette this week. The Pirates edged the Tigers on Tuesday by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win, 6-5. On Wednesday, The Hall defeated Lafayette, 8-3.
COMEBACK KIDS
On Tuesday vs. Princeton, Sal Annunziata hit a solo home run to give The Hall a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth. But the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 advantage. With two outs and the bases empty, the Pirates mounted a comeback and won the game on an RBI single by Tyler Boyd, 6-5. It's the first time Seton Hall has trailed in the ninth inning and won since rallying against Notre Dame on April 5, 2012.
ANOTHER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zack Weigel was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday. The Pirates' leadoff hitter batted .462 and posted an on-base percentage of .562 in four games last week. In all four games, Weigel recorded at least one hit and reached base at least twice. He's the second straight Pirate to earn the honor as D.J. Ruhlman did so last week.
MARVELOUS MCCARTHY
In only his third career start, Shane McCarthy threw a complete-game shutout on Sunday vs. Connecticut. The freshman gave up just six hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter to improve to 2-1 on the young season. For his efforts, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
SEASON DEBUTS
During Sunday's second game vs. UConn a pair of Pirates made their season debuts. Sophomore Joe DiBenedetto, returning from injury, came on in relief. Freshman Zach Schellenger, a 6-foot-5, right-hander, made his collegiate debut and first start.
CLEPTOMANIACS
Seton Hall is again leading the BIG EAST in steals by a wide margin. As a team, the Pirates 39 steals lead the conference. Derek Jenkins (10), D.J. Ruhlman (8) and Zack Weigel (8) are 1, 2, 3 in the BIG EAST among individuals.
POUNDING THE PEACOCKS
Seton Hall used a 10-run fourth inning to rout Saint Peter's, 16-2, on Wednesday for its fifth straight victory. Anthony Pacillo earned his first win of the season with seven innings of two-run ball.
TURNING THE CORNER
Two years ago, the 2013 Pirates began the season 0-9, but finished a memorable season with a 37-19 overall record. This year, the Pirates appear to be headed towards a similar turnaround. After nine games, The Hall was just 1-8, but now is just a game away from .500 at 9-10.
SNOWBIRD DOMINANCE
Seton Hall won all four of its games as part of the Snowbird Classic during its Spring Break trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. The Pirates didn't score fewer than 11 runs in any of the games defeating Florida International (12-10), Saint Joseph's (16-9), Lehigh (13-6) and Western Michigan (11-2).
