SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Junior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth as the Seton Hall baseball team completed the series sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in the second game of Sunday's double-header.
With the score knotted a one in the bottom of the eighth, Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Martin stole second and scored on Jenkins' single up the middle.
Seton Hall (12-10) trailed for six innings until finally tying the score with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) reached base on a throwing error by FDU's third baseman. With one out, Falconi stole second and moved to third on Sal Annunziata's fly out. Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) followed with an RBI double over the head of the Knights' left fielder to tie the game at one.
Meanwhile, the Pirates used seven pitchers to limit FDU to just one run. Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) made his second career start and was impressive in limited work. The 6-foot-5 right-hander pitched four innings and allowed just one unearned run, while striking out six and walking just one in a no decision.
The Pirates' bullpen gave up just three hits and no runs over the final five innings. Junior Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) picked up his second win of the season with a perfect eighth inning. He also struck out two. Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) preserved the one-run victory in the ninth to earn his first career save.
Lost in the Pirates' victory was the strong start by FDU's Logan Frati. The junior took the hard-luck loss with eight innings and gave up just one earned run. Frati was perfect through the game's first 4.2 innings.
Seton Hall's pitching was impressive throughout the series vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, allowing only two earned runs in the three games. In the process, the Pirates lowered their team ERA by more than half a run.
The victory is Seton Hall's fifth straight and 11th in its last 13 games since starting the season 1-8.
The Hall will return to action this Tuesday, March 31 when it hosts Rider. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
