TAMPA, FLA. - Sophomore Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) reached base three times and connected on a home run, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall baseball team lost in the series finale at USF, 12-6, on Sunday.
Poduslenko finished the day 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs, two stolen bases and the aforementioned home run.
Junior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) also reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, an RBI and a double.
Seton Hall appeared poised for a big inning right away as USF starter Joe Cavallaro walked three batters to load the bases with one out. But Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) flew out to shallow center field and Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the second, it was USF that capitalized on a big inning. Seton Hall starter Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) gave up a leadoff double, followed by a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs. A single, sacrifice fly and fielder's choice in succession plated three runs for the Bulls. After a hit-by-pitch, USF's Kyle Teaf hit a bases-clearing triple to score two more. When the dust cleared, USF emerged from the second inning with a 6-0 lead.
Cahill never got out of the second and took the loss with six earned runs.
In the top of the third, Seton Hall got one run back on Poduslenko's leadoff home run, the first of his career and the first of the season for Seton Hall.
After USF scored in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 7-1, the Seton Hall offense finally showed real signs of life with a three-run top of the fourth. With one out, Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) and Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) hit back-to-back singles. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with a double down the left field line to plate Falconi with the Pirates' second run. Poduslenko then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Ramiz. With two outs, Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) hit a scorcher to first base. USF first baseman Buddy Putnam couldn't handle it and the ball bounced into foul territory allowing Weigel to score from second and cutting the USF lead to 7-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulls struck for five more runs off the Pirates' bullpen to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) got a hit in his first career at bat, a pinch-hitting opportunity in the eighth inning. The back-up catcher also stole his first base and scored his first run.
Seton Hall will remain in Florida as the University is on its Spring Break. The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at it faces Florida International as part of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
