SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- For a second straight game, the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't muster a timely hit and fell to Butler, 3-1, despite solid pitching, on Sunday.
Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) walked to lead off. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice and Ramiz was able to advance to second base on a fielding error by Butler's second baseman. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with a sacrifice bunt to put the tying runs in scoring position. But Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) went down on strikes for the second out of the inning and D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) popped out in foul territory to strand the runners and end the game.
Seton Hall (18-15, 5-4) also stranded two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. In all, the Pirates left 11 men on base.
Freshman Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) took the loss, going just 3.2 innings and giving up two earned runs. Senior Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) turned in another strong relief outing. The left-hander pitched the rest of the game, 5.1 innings, and gave up just one earned run, while striking out three and walking none.
Schellenger gave up his two runs in the top of the third. The Pirates immediately struck back in the bottom of the third, but that's all the offense Seton Hall would garner on Sunday. Ramiz singled through the left side to lead off the inning and moved to second with one out when Weigel was hit by a pitch. After a double-steal moved both runners into scoring position, Ruhlman reached on an infield single to drive in Ramiz and cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1.
Grimm was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with a double today raise his team-leading batting average to .356.
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, April 21 when it travels to Monmouth for a mid-week non-conference game. First pitch is schedule for 3:30 p.m.
