OMAHA, NEB. -- Senior Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) tossed a complete game as the Seton Hall baseball team eliminated Georgetown from the 2015 BIG EAST Championship with a 5-1 victory on Friday.
Elia saved his best-career performance for the conference's highest stage. The left-hander pitched to just three batters over the minimum, allowing just one run on four hits, with a career-high nine strikeouts and no walks. Elia gave up a solo home run to Georgetown's Ryan Busch to lead off the game, but was nearly untouchable the rest of the way.
Seton Hall (25-24) tied the game in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of some wildness by Georgetown starter Matt Hollenbeck. D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. A second wild pitch allowed the Pirate shortstop to score. It appeared as though the Pirates were going to add more, but they stranded two in scoring position.
In the fourth inning, Seton Hall provided all of the offense Elia would need. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by Busch at short and stole second base. With two outs, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) tripled off the right-field wall, which scored Annunziata with the go-ahead run. Hollenbeck's fourth wild pitch of the game allowed Ramiz to score and extend The Hall's lead to 3-1.
Annunziata added more insurance for the Pirates in the top of the fifth inning with a booming two-out solo home run. The senior's sixth of the season and 20th of the his career is the first home run hit between the power alleys in the five-year history of TD Ameritrade Park. That statistic includes Creighton's home games and all College World Series games played since the national event moved from historic Rosenblatt Stadium. Annunziata's blast was a no-doubter and sailed over the wall to the right of the 375 sign in right-center field.
Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) reached on Busch's second error of the game to lead off the seventh inning. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with a double to right field, which scored Jenkins from first to give The Hall a 5-1 advantage.
Ruhlman and Ramiz led the Pirates with two hits apiece.
The loss ends the season for Georgetown, which was making its first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship since 1986.
Seton Hall will now play Creighton, who lost to St. John's in Friday's second game. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. It's another elimination game as the loser will see its championship run come to an end.
