PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA. -- The Seton Hall baseball team held a seven-run lead, but Villanova rallied to defeat the Pirates, 12-10, in the second game of a Saturday double-header.
The Pirates' bullpen, which had been a strength of the team all season long, gave up eight earned runs in relief of starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.), who only went three innings.
Seton Hall's offense erupted for 10 runs and 10 hits and was aided by four Wildcat errors, but alas Villanova came back with six runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth inning. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) led the Pirates by going 3-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt, a runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
The Hall's offense scored early and often, putting runs on the scoreboard in each of the first three innings. In the top of the third with two outs, freshman Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) drilled a two-RBI triple to extend the Pirates' lead to 4-1.
After Villanova cut the Pirates' lead to 4-3, The Hall's offense struck again in the top of the sixth. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) led off with a single up the middle and Jenkins sacrifice bunted him to second. With two outs, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) walked and with Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) at the plate, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Grimm then followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to give Seton Hall a 6-3 lead.
The next inning, the Pirates cranked up the offense again. With one out, Seton Hall batters hit four consecutive singles. The last two drove in runs. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in the Pirates' third run of the inning and make the score 9-3. The Hall's fifth single of the inning, by Poduslenko, gave them a commanding 10-3 advantage.
Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) had tossed three scoreless innings in relief before running into trouble in the seventh. Dan Ditusa (St. Charles, Ill.) entered the inning and struggled as well. When the smoke cleared, three runs had been tagged on both relievers and Villanova cut the lead to 10-9.
Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) entered the game in the seventh and got the final out of the inning, but surrendered his first three runs of the season in the eighth inning and ended up taking the loss.
Seton Hall will return to action next Friday, May 15 as the Pirates complete the 2015 regular season with the first of three games against Georgetown at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
