McCarthy, Alescio Named Preseason All-BIG EAST

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seton Hall juniors Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) were named to the 2017 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Tuesday. Collectively, the Pirates are picked to finish fourth in the seven-team league by the conference's coaches in the preseason poll.

McCarthy was one of only four unanimous selections to this year's Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The Pirates' ace is coming off a dominant season, which earned him placement on the 2016 BIG EAST First Team and ABCA All-Region Second Team. The right-hander led the BIG EAST in innings pitched, earned run average and strikeouts, and became the first player in both Seton Hall and BIG EAST history to throw a perfect game.

Alescio saw action in 50 games last year, splitting time between catcher and designated hitter. Named to the 2016 Johnny Bench Watch List, he finished second on the team and ranked eighth in the BIG EAST with a .310 batting average. His .418 slugging percentage ranked second-best on the Pirates among regulars and he stole 10 bases in 12 attempts.

Xavier and St. John's tied in the voting and are preseason co-favorites to win the BIG EAST championship in 2017. The Musketeers received 32 votes and four first-place votes, while the Red Storm had 32 votes and three first place votes. Creighton received 25 points to place third, while the Pirates were just one vote behind with 24. Georgetown, Villanova and Butler round out the poll, receiving 17, nine and eight points respectively.
