PREVIEW
Seton Hall will play four games at Florida International University in Miami, Fla. this week. The Hall will play a traditional weekend series with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and then play an additional game on Tuesday, March 1.
For the first time, a live audio stream will be available via the Pirates Sports Network. Tune in at SHUpirates.com to hear all four games on your computer or mobile device live from Miami.
Seton Hall ran into two strong pitchers, and dropped the first two games of the season, but rebounded nicely to win the final two games of its series with No. 15 Missouri. The Pirates scored just one run over the first to games, but burst out for a total of 17 runs in the final two. For the four-game set, The Hall averaged 10 hits per game. Mikael-Ali Mogues was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after a strong effort vs. Missouri. The first baseman batted a conference-best .636 and reached base 13 times. Zach Prendergast was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after a strong outing in the series finale. The right-hander went seven innings and allowed just one run, while striking out eight batters and walking only one in Seton Hall's 9-1 victory. The Pirates' other victory was earned by freshman Cullen Dana in the second game of Saturday's double-header. The left-hander allowed just one hit, a two-run homer, over six innings. He struck out six and walked four in The Hall's 8-4 win. Mike Alescio, Chris Chiaradio, Ryan Ramiz and Mike Caputo all batted over .300 in the series. Caputo hit his first career home run. Right-hander Chris Morris notched his first collegiate save on Saturday.
THINGS TO KNOW
PIRATES SPLIT WITH #15 MISSOURI
After a slow start to the weekend, Seton Hall earned a split with No. 15 Missouri, with the Tigers winning the first two games, and the Pirates winning the last two. The Pirates averaged 10 hits per game for the series and batted .305.
MOGUES BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday. The first baseman recorded at least one hit in all four games and reached base a total of 13 times. Mogues led the BIG EAST in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage this weekend.
PRENDERGAST BIG EAST PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Junior Zach Prendergast was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The right-hander pitched seven innings and allowed just one earned run, while striking out eight batters and walking only one. The victory enabled Seton Hall to earn a split of the four-game series against the 15th-ranked Tigers.
LIVE AUDIO STREAM ARRIVES
For select road Seton Hall games, the Pirate Sports Network will provide a live audio stream. The stream is available only at SHUpirates.com and is included in your Pirates Sports Network subscription. All seven games during Spring Break, that's four against FIU and three at the Snowbird Classic, will have a live audio stream.
FRESHMAN DAZZLES
In his first collegiate start, freshman Cullen Dana gave up just one hit over six innings vs. Missouri on Saturday. The left-hander struck out six batters and walked four to earn the victory.
ALESCIO EMERGES
Sophomore Mike Alescio contributed mightily in his two starts this weekend. In game one of Saturday's double-header, he went 2-for-4. On Sunday, he reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks, a double and a career-high four RBIs.
PIRATES MAKE DEBUTS
Last weekend, four Pirates made their collegiate debuts. Freshmen Sebastiano Santorelli and Chris Villa received their first at bats, with Santorelli getting his first hit. Cullen Dana made his first career start with six innings of one-hit ball and earned the win in the second game of Saturday's double-header, while sophomore Andrew Politi pitched two scoreless innings of relief on Sunday.
MILESTONE APPROACHING
Head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 20 victories to pass Seton Hall coaching legend Owen T. Carroll for second on the Pirates' wins list. Currently, he has 322 victories. His father, Mike Sheppard, is Seton Hall's all-time leader in wins with 998.
2016 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2016 BIG EAST Baseball Championship will be played on Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., May 26-29. Ripken Stadium is the home for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, a single A short-season affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
MCCARTHY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST
Sophomore Shane McCarthy was named to the 2016 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2015, McCarthy led the BIG EAST Conference in earned run average, fewest runs allowed, fewest earned runs allowed and fewest walks.
BIGGIO ENTERS HALL OF FAME
On July 26, Craig Biggio officially became the first former Seton Hall baseball player to be enshrined into Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Biggio, who played at Seton Hall from 1985 to 1987, joined Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz as 2015 inductees.
