EMERSON, GA -- FreshmanCullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) gave up just one run over seven innings and senior Brett Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) belted a three-run home run as the Seton Hall baseball team downed Iowa, 7-1, on Saturday.
The victory is the Pirates' fourth straight and second at the Perfect Game Spring Swing in Emerson, Ga. The Hall will go for the event sweep tomorrow morning vs. Nebraska-Omaha.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall's offense didn't take long to assert itself. The Pirates struck for four runs in the top of the first inning. With two runners on and one out, Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Fontenelli followed with his first career home run, a three-run shot to left field, which put The Hall on top, 4-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Dana improves to 2-0 with the victory, scattering six hits and striking out three batters.
- Two Hawkeye errors in the top of the sixth inning led to another Seton Hall run. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) delivered a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
- In the seventh inning, the Pirates scored two more times, thanks in part to a pair of Iowa wild pitches. Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch, and Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) scored on an RBI groundout by Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.).
- Sophomore Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) pitched the final two scoreless innings for Seton Hall, retiring five of the six outs via strikeout.
- Seton Hall left four men on base, while Iowa left eight.
News & Notes:
- With the victory, head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 14 more victories to pass Owen T. Carroll for second on Seton Hall's career wins list.
- Seton Hall is now 3-1 vs. teams from the Big Ten Conference this season.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow for its final of three games at the Perfect Game Spring Swing in Emerson, Ga. The Hall will face Nebraska-Omaha at 10:00 am.
