PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Junior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) went 3-for-3, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell at Rutgers, 3-2, on Wednesday.
Seton Hall (23-11) scored four runs with two outs in the ninth inning yesterday before eventually edging the Scarlet Knights in 10 innings, and it appeared as though as similar come-from-behind effort was coming today. Down 3-1, the Pirates loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning, but were only able to score one run on a wild pitch. Rutgers closer Reed Shuttle was able to induce an infield pop-up before striking out the final two batters to preserve the win.
A day after the Pirates recorded five errors in a comeback win over Rutgers at Owen T. Carroll Field, they committed two errors in the bottom of the second inning, which contributed to an unearned run and the Scarlet Knights taking a 1-0 lead.
A two-out rally tied the game for Seton Hall in the top of the fourth inning. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) doubled down the left field line, and Fortin followed with an RBI single through the left side to plate The Hall's first run.
The first three Rutgers batters in the bottom of the fourth reached base against Seton Hall starter Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.), and produced the second run of the game for the Scarlet Knights. Senior Sam Burum (Robbinsville N.J.) entered in relief and prevented further damage.
Turning Point:
Trailing 2-1, Seton Hall closer Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) entered the game in the eighth inning. After two strikeouts to begin the inning, he hit Juwann Harris with a pitch. Harris then stole two bases and scored the all-important insurance run on a balk.
Inside the Numbers:
- Fortin led the Pirates' offense with three hits.
- Senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) stole his nation-leading 33rd base of the season.
- Seton Hall left five men on base in the last two innings, including four in scoring position.
- Rutgers R.J. Devish was thrown out attempting to steal home to end the bottom of the seventh inning.
- Sophomore Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) retired all three batters he faced in the sixth inning.
- Burum allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Seton Hall left seven men on base, while Rutgers left eight.
News & Notes:
- Today's game featured Seton Hall the second-ranked team in the nation with 91 steals and Rutgers the seventh-ranked team in the nation with 71 steals.
- Seton Hall falls to 44-47 all-time against the Scarlet Knights.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday as it welcomes LIU-Brooklyn to Owen T. Carroll Field for the first game of a three-game series this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.
