PREVIEW
Seton Hall will continue BIG EAST Conference play when it travels to Georgetown for a three-game series this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Seton Hall has won five straight including a sweep of Villanova last weekend. The Pirates walked off with extra-inning wins twice in the series against the Wildcats. On Friday, Seton Hall scored three runs with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, before eventually winning it in the 11th inning, 4-3. Senior Zack Weigel delivered a two-out, game-winning hit over the right-fielder to drive in the winning run. On Saturday, The Hall stole a season-high 12 bases in a 13-8 victory. Weigel stole four bases and Derek Jenkins grabbed three. On Sunday, the Pirates walked off again with a 7-6 victory in 10 innings. This time, it was Matt Fortin delivering an RBI single to score Jenkins with the winning run. The Hall erupted for a season-high 18 hits in the victory. For his efforts last week, Weigel was named BIG EAST Player of the Week.
On Wednesday, Seton Hall defeated Saint Peter's, 8-1. Weigel doubled, tripled and drove in two runs in the victory. Seton Hall used eight pitchers. Dylan Verdonk picked up his first career victory.
SERIES INFORMATION
Seton Hall and Georgetown will resume their long rivalry this weekend. The Pirates have dominated the all-time series, winning 79 of 104 contests. Last year, the teams met four times with Seton Hall winning three. The Hall took two of three games during a regular season series at Owen T. Carroll Field and eliminated the Hoyas with a 5-1 victory at the BIG EAST Championship in Omaha. Zack Weigel batted .286 with a triple and two stolen bases vs. Georgetown last year.
Georgetown enters the weekend with an overall record of 20-23 and a 4-5 mark in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas are coming off a double-header split with Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday. Last weekend, Georgetown dropped two of three games at Butler. The weekend prior, they won two of three games vs. Xavier.
THINGS TO KNOW
PIRATES ROUT SAINT PETER'S
Senior Zack Weigel went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs as the Pirates downed Saint Peter's, 8-1, on Wednesday for their fifth straight win. The victory improves Seton Hall to 30-12 overall. It's the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Pirates have reached the 30-win plateau. The Hall still has 14 regular season games still to play.
STRIKEOUT ARTIST
Sophomore Zach Schellenger has struck out 57 batters in only 36.0 innings so far this year, which is a rate of 14.25 strikeouts per nine innings. He ranks third in the BIG EAST despite having started only two games. Over his last three appearances, he has recorded his last 12 outs all via strikeout.
PIRATES SWEEP VILLANOVA
Seton Hall improved to 4-2 in BIG EAST Conference play with a three-game sweep of Villanova last weekend. The Pirates rallied to defeat the Wildcats, 4-3, in 11 innings on Friday. They used 12 stolen bases to run past them, 13-8, on Saturday, and edged the Wildcats, 7-6, in 10 innings on Sunday.
WEIGEL NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Zack Weigel was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week on Monday. Weigel was dominant both at the plate and on the base paths last week and helped lead the Pirates to a perfect 4-0 record. The outfielder batted a team-best .562 with a team-high nine hits. He also stole 10 bases in four games, walked four times and scored seven runs.
ANOTHER REMARKABLE COMEBACK
Seton Hall showed its resilience again with a dramatic comeback against Villanova on Friday. The Pirates trailed 3-0, with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth, but rallied for three runs to send the game into extra innings. The Hall won the game with a run in the 11th inning. Zack Weigel provided the winning hit with the bases loaded, over the right-fielder's head in the 10th inning.
EXTRA INNING EXCELLENCE
With two wins in extra innings against Villanova last week, the Pirates improved to a perfect 5-0 in extra inning games this season. The Hall came back to down Villanova on Friday in 11 innings, 4-3, and edged the Wildcats, 7-6, on Sunday. In five extra inning games this year, Seton Hall's bullpen has a 1.04 earned run average.
MOGUES FINDS POWER SWING
Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues crushed home runs to right field at Owen T. Carroll Field in back-to-back games last weekend vs. Villanova. The lefty went yard in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday, and led off the second inning with a blast on Sunday. He now has a team-best three home runs on the season and five for his career.
MCARTHUR EMERGES
Freshman Liam McArthur registered his best game as a collegian vs. Villanova on April 23. The speedster went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored.
PAIR OF TRIPS
Junior Jackson Martin had a breakout game vs. Villanova on April 24. The outfielder went 3-for-3 with two triples, two runs scored and two RBIs. He's the first Pirate with two triples in a single game since Scott Kalamar on April 27, 2013 coincidentally against Villanova.
MR. PERFECT
Sophomore Shane McCarthy pitched the first perfect game in Seton Hall and BIG EAST history on Friday vs. LIU-Brooklyn. The right-hander needed just 88 pitches and struck out eight batters. It's only the 27th perfect game in NCAA Division I history. McCarthy improved to 4-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.64.
