NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seton Hall freshman Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Senior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) was selected to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Dana tossed his first career complete-game shutout in Seton Hall's 7-0 victory over St. John's on Sunday. Needing a series win, Seton Hall turned to the left-hander, who scattered just five hits against the BIG EAST's most-potent offense. Dana struck out seven batters and didn't issue a walk, while improving to 6-2 on the season and lowering his earned run average to 2.81.
Weigel had a monster week for Seton Hall, collecting at least two hits and one RBI in all four games, and leading the Pirates with a .625 batting average. On Wednesday vs. Rider, Weigel reached base a team-high five times, going 3-for-3 with two walks, a run scored, three RBIs and three stolen bases. On Friday vs. St. John's, he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a sacrifice fly. Saturday, Weigel collected three more hits, going 3-for-5 with his first career home run, a towering shot to right field, two runs scored and a stolen base. He finished up a big week with two more hits against the Red Storm on Sunday.
Xavier's Joe Gellenbeck was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Those joining Weigel on the Weekly Honor Roll include: Butler's Chris Maranto, Georgetown's Alex Baumer, Villanova's Max Beerman and Xavier's Rylan Bannon.
The Pirates will return to action tomorrow, May 17, when they make the short trip to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark for a game at NJIT. First pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
