INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Junior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) went 4-for-4 and sophomore Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) pitched seven strong innings as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Butler, 8-2, on Thursday.
The victory improves the Pirates to 36-18 overall and 8-8 in BIG EAST Conference play. The Pirates now need just one win in the final two games at Butler to clinch a berth in the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament.
Thanks to two Seton Hall errors in the bottom of the first inning, the Bulldogs scored the game's first run to take an early 1-0 lead. The lead however, was short-lived as the Pirates struck back immediately with a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game at one apiece.
Turning Point:
With the score still tied at one, the Pirates took the lead in the top of the fourth inning and never trailed again. Senior Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) led off the inning with a single to left field and stole second base. With one out, Poduslenko doubled to left-center field to score Weigel with the go-ahead run.
The following inning, the Pirates pulled off a little two-out magic. With two down and no one on base, senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) singled and stole second base. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to right field, which scored Chiaradio. Weigel then drove in Jenkins with a single to extend The Hall's lead to 4-1.
Inside the Numbers:
- Poduslenko went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored.
- McCarthy allowed just one earned run over seven innings to improve to 6-4 on the season.
- Five Pirates had multiple hits.
- Weigel went 3-for-4 with a run scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
