Seton Hall's baseball, men's golf and women's swimming & diving programs had the highest collective GPA's in the conference for their sport.
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seton Hall's baseball, men's golf and women's swimming & diving programs were named recipients of BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport for the 2015-16 year.
Â
The conference announced the 22 teams, representing 22 sports on Thursday. Eight different schools had at least one team honored, with DePaul leading the way with six certificates. Creighton had five teams recognized, followed by Seton Hall with three. Butler, Georgetown and St. John's each boasted a pair of honorees. Temple and Villanova rounded out the list of schools recognized with solo nods for women's lacrosse and men's basketball respectively.
Â
The winners were chosen based on the 2015-16 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Â
The baseball team led all men's programs at Seton Hall with a 3.411 grade-point average this year. Additionally, the team was one of six Pirate programs to be recognized by the NCAA with the APR Public Recognition Award, sporting Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. Graduate Zack Weigel was Seton Hall's lone male nominee for BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Â
All eight members of the men's golf team were named BIG EAST Academic All-Stars earlier this summer. Collectively, the Pirates were named an All-Academic Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America, and were one of only 24 Division I men's golf programs to receive the prestigious President's Special Recognition. Both Lloyd Jefferson Go and Ryan Snouffer were named Cleveland Golf All-American Scholars.
Â
The women's swimming & diving program was named a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches' Association of America and 87% of its student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Star Team. Furthermore, graduate Gabby Signorelli earned the BIG EAST Sports Excellence Award given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.
