NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seton Hall junior Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.), as well as seniors Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.), were named to the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Tuesday. Collectively, the Pirates are picked to finish fourth in the seven-team league by the conference's coaches in the preseason poll.
Dana was one of only four unanimous selections to this year's Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. In 2017, the left-hander earned BIG EAST Second Team status for a second straight season. Dana was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after throwing seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts against one of the top offenses in the country, St. John's, on April 29. He also tossed a complete-game shutout in a seven-inning game with eight strikeouts at Villanova on May 14. Last season, Dana ranked among the BIG EAST top-7 in wins, earned run average and strikeouts.
For McCarthy, it's the third straight season being named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. In 2016, he was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and ABCA All-Region Second Team. The right-hander led the BIG EAST in innings pitched, earned run average and strikeouts, and became the first player in both Seton Hall and BIG EAST history to throw a perfect game. McCarthy will be looking to bounce back after an inconsistent junior campaign.
Ramiz set career-highs in batting average, doubles, triples, RBIs, total bases and stolen bases this season in 2016. Named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, his 17 stolen bases tied for third-most in the conference and he led the Pirates with 15 multi-hit games. Named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on May 15, Ramiz also ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in triples and seventh in walks. His 133 career hits lead all returning Pirates.
St. John's is the preseason favorites to win the BIG EAST championship in 2018, receiving 35 points and five of seven first-place votes. Xavier is predicted to finish second, and received 30 points and the remaining two first-place votes. Creighton netted 24 points to place third, while the Pirates were just one vote behind with 23. Butler, Georgetown and Villanova round out the poll, receiving 18, 11 and six points respectively.
