PREVIEW:
Seton Hall will make its 2017 home debut at Owen T. Carroll Field this weekend when it hosts the Strikeout Cancer Classic. The Pirates will welcome Manhattan, Brown and Lehigh to campus. Each team will play three games. The Pirates will play once each day, opening with Manhattan at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.Â
Â
The Pirates are coming off a 4-4 Spring Break trip, including a 1-2 performance in Gainesville last weekend against second-ranked Florida. The Pirates fell, 8-0, on Friday. On Saturday, The Hall split a doubleheader. Seton Hall rallied for a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game in the first contest, before winning the game in the 13th inning. Ryan Testani pitched six scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. Mike Caputo drove in both the tying and winning runs. In game two of Saturday's doubleheader, the Pirates led 3-0, but lost, 4-3. Sophomore Cullen Dana allowed just two earned runs over 6.1 innings and matched his career-high with nine strikeouts.
Â
SERIES INFORMATION:
Seton Hall owns a 23-5 all-time series lead over Manhattan. Most recently, the Pirates swept the Jaspers last season. Overall, Seton Has won seven straight games in the series. This year, Manhattan enters the weekend with a 2-9 record. They're coming off a pair of losses on Sunday to UMass-Lowell.
Â
The Hall and Brown have never met. The Bears enter the weekend with a 0-6 record, but they played a three-game series at national-powerhouse Texas A&M very closely, losing all three games by four runs or less. Their mid-week game vs. Holy Cross was snowed out on Wednesday.
Â
The Pirates have won two of three all-time meetings with Lehigh. Most recently, Seton Hall defeated the Mountain Hawks, 13-6, at the Snowbird Classic in early 2015. Lehigh enters the weekend with a record of X-X, and is coming off a XXX on Wednesday to North Dakota State in Florida.Â
Â
THINGS TO KNOW:
TESTANI NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Senior Ryan Testani was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 13. The right-hander had one of the great relief pitching performances in Seton Hall history in game one of a doubleheader at No. 2 Florida on March 11. Testani pitched six innings of scoreless relief, allowing only three hits to earn the victory.
Â
WEATHER CANCELS WEEKEND VIDEO
Due to inclement weather planned in the South Orange area this weekend, the Pirate Sports Network won't have a live video stream, but it will provide an audio stream, just as it has for road games so far this season.
Â
PIRATES RALLY TO EDGE NO. 2 FLORIDA
Mike Caputo dropped a perfect safety squeeze bunt to drive in the tying run in the top of the ninth inning at No. 2 Florida on Saturday. In the top of the 13th inning, it was Caputo again delivering a sacrifice fly to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead. Anthony Pacillo entered in the bottom of the 13th and earned the save.
Â
DANA DAZZLES
Sophomore Cullen Dana had a strong start in game two of a doubleheader at No. 2 Florida. The left-hander allowed two earned runs over 6.1 innings, while matching his career-high of nine strikeouts and walking only one batter. He received a no decision.
Â
FANTASTIC FRESHMAN
Newcomer Ricky DeVito has been very impressive so far in five relief appearances this year. The freshman has yet to allow an earned run in 8.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 12 batters and walked six.
Â
TOP STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Through 15 games this season, Seton Hall has the No. 1 strength of schedule in the nation. In addition to having just played a three-game series at second-ranked Florida, the Pirates have also played Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee and Southeastern Louisiana, who all currently rank in the RPI top-50.
Â
PIRATES SWEEP STETSON
Seton Hall got back to the .500 mark with a sweep of its brief two-game mid-week series at Stetson earlier this week. The Hall downed the Hatters, 5-1, on Tuesday, and held on for a 6-5 victory on Wednesday. They were the first two mid-week games of the season for the Pirates.
Â
POLITI SLAMS THE DOOR
Junior Andrew Politi entered the game on Wednesday at Stetson with a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Hatters had the bases loaded with no outs. The right-hander, who entered the game with an infinite ERA, struck out the side. In the ninth, he allowed two singles, but managed to strike out the side again to earn the improbable save.
Â
MORRIS BOUNCES BACK
After a rough first start, junior Chris Morris bounced back at Stetson on Wednesday. The right-hander allowed just one earned run over 4.2 innings pitched in a no decision.
Â
LAYNE, JR. DAZZLES IN FIRST START
Making his first collegiate start, Billy Layne, Jr. was nearly untouchable at Stetson on Tuesday. The sophomore pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. He earned his first career victory.
