SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed only two hits over five shutout innings as the Seton Hall baseball team blanked Lehigh, 3-0, in the finale of the Strikeout Cancer Classic on Sunday.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and it turned out to be all the offense they needed. With Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) on second base, Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled through the left side to drive in the first run of the game.
In the sixth inning, the Pirates struck for two insurance runs. With two outs, Alescio walked. Senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) followed with a double to right-center field, which scored Alescio from first base. After Fortin advanced to third on a wild pitch, senior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) singled through the right side to extend The Hall's lead to 3-0.
Four Pirate relievers combined to keep the Mountain Hawks off the scoreboard over the final four innings.
Inside the Numbers:
- Junior Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
- Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.), Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.), Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) and Rick DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
- DeVito struck out the side in the ninth inning.
- Toke and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) each walked twice.
- Seton Hall left nine men on base, while Lehigh left 10.
- Alescio has hit safely in his last 11 games.
- DeVito has now struck out 15 batters in 9.1 innings so far this season.
- The Hall recorded its first shutout of the season.
- Seton Hall improves to 3-1 all-time against Lehigh.
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, March 22 when they travel to Easton, Pa. to take on Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. ET.
