OMAHA, NEB. – Senior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) allowed just three runs over 5.2 innings, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to top-seeded Creighton, 4-1, in the opening round of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship on Thursday.
The game was a pitchers' duel early on with both starters, Prendergast and Creighton's Rollie Lacy, pitching in and out of trouble. Seton Hall stranded two runners in the top of the first inning, and a double-play ended the top of the third with a runner on third base. In the bottom of the third inning, Creighton left the bases full, and stranded two runners in the fourth inning.
Turning Point:
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Prendergast allowed a two-run home run to Creighton's Clark Brinkman to break the scoreless tie.
The Pirates got a run back with in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached on an infield single. With two outs, Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit a chopper to short. The Creighton shortstop threw wide of first base and Toke came in to score the Pirates' first run.
Creighton added a pair of insurance runs with two out hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning and eighth innings.
