SECAUCAS, N.J. – Seton Hall's Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) was selected in the 18th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.
Morris becomes the third Seton Hall player selected in the 2017 Draft, joining former teammates Zach Schellenger, who was selected in the sixth round by the Boston Red Sox yesterday, and Shane McCarthy, who was chosen only 10 spots before Morris by the St. Louis Cardinals. Morris is the first Pirate chosen by the Rangers since Ryan Harvey in 2012.
After limited game action as a freshman, Morris developed into a useful asset as both a starter and reliever as a sophomore. In 2015, he appeared in 20 games, making five starts and pitching to a 3.76 earned run average. Morris recorded two saves and struck out 39 batters in 38.1 innings pitched. His best career start came as a sophomore when he allowed only one run over 6.2 innings pitched with a career-high eight strikeouts and no walks against Nebraska-Omaha.
As a junior, Morris became a key member of Seton Hall's weekend rotation. The right-hander appeared in 10 games and made nine starts, and compiled career-highs with three wins, 44 strikeouts and 40.1 innings pitched. Morris recorded a 3.57 earned run average and opponents hit only .201 against him, both of which were also career bests. In his top start of the season, he limited Creighton to only two hits over six shutout innings on May 5.
