MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Former Seton Hall baseball player Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) was promoted from the triple-A Rochester Red Wings to the Minnesota Twins and will be in uniform when the Twins host the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
Granite becomes the second former Pirate to be active in Major League Baseball joining Jason Grilli, who recently signed a contract with the Texas Rangers. Grilli starred for Seton Hall from 1995-97. Additionally, Granite becomes the 29th player in Seton Hall history to reach baseball's pinnacle.
Granite's promotion comes after dominating the triple-A level this summer. The centerfielder led the International League by more than 40 points with a .361 average and stole 15 bases in 59 games. At one point, he hit safely in 28 of 29 games and was named the League's Player of the Month for June.
Last year, Granite played the entire 2016 season for the Twins' double-A affiliate Chattanooga Lookouts and was named Minnesota's Minor League Player of the Year. The Lookouts team Most Valuable Player and a post-season all-star, he led all of minor league baseball with 56 stolen bases. His .295 batting average in 526 at bats led Chattanooga and ranked fourth in the Southern League.
Prior to realizing his dream as a professional baseball player, Granite established himself as one of the top leadoff men in Seton Hall history. A starter in all 156 games he played in a Pirates' uniform from 2011 to 2013, he owned a career .299 batting average with 68 stolen bases and a .990 fielding percentage as Seton Hall's everyday centerfielder. As a freshman in 2011, he helped guide the Pirates to their first BIG EAST Championship in 10 years and an NCAA Regional appearance.
Granite was drafted in the 14th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Twins, just weeks after guiding the Pirates to a 37-19 record during his junior season.
