NEW YORK – A total of 206 Seton Hall student-athletes have been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the 2016-17 season, the league announced on Wednesday (Aug. 2). The number features multiple members from all 14 varsity sports and in total encompasses 82 percent of all Seton Hall student-athletes.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member and seven affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
For the sixth-straight year Seton Hall student-athletes broke a record for cumulative GPA, closing the 2016-17 academic year with a 3.373 cumulative GPA. Four teams (men's golf, baseball, men's and women's swimming and diving) recently earned the 2016-17 BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award for earning the highest team GPA among all teams in the BIG EAST. Additionally, five student-athletes won BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards for academic and athletic success; Alexis Walkden (softball), Cassie Pantelas (women's golf), Lloyd Jefferson Go (men's golf), Noah Yanchulis (men's swimming and diving) and Tessa Fournier (volleyball).
Two student-athletes, Walkden and baseball's Joe Poduslenko, earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District II honors this season. Baseball, men's basketball, men's and women's cross country and women's golf all received NCAA recognition for ranking in the top 10 percent of the nation for Academic Progress Rating (APR). Amongst the outgoing senior class, 32 student-athletes earned the academic merit award and graduated with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
