NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seton Hall sophomore Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week on Monday. Teammate Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Shedler-McAvoy has been on a tear offensively since returning from a hand injury that sidelined him for the first 13 games of the season. The center fielder had at least two hits, reached base three times and scored a run in all three games last week against Hawaii, hitting a team-best .636. On Friday, he reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Seton Hall's 9-8 victory. He was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI on Saturday. On Sunday, Shedler-McAvoy burst out for a 3-for-4 day with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored at Hawaii.
Leon was essential to the Pirates winning the first game of their series at the University of Hawaii. The closer entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning in an 8-8 game and proceeded to throw three perfect innings, affording Seton Hall the chance to eventually win the game, 9-8, in 11 innings. He retired all nine batters he faced, and had one strikeout, to pick up his first victory of the season.
Georgetown's Brent Killam was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. Those joining Leon on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll include: Sean Mooney and John Valente of St. John's as well as Clark Brinkman and Ryan Tapani of Creighton.
Shedler-McAvoy, Leon and the rest of the Pirates will return to action later today for the final game of a four-game series at the University of Hawaii. First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 a.m. ET (6:35 p.m. HT).
