Pirates Announce 2019 Baseball Schedule
1/4/2019 11:00:00 AM | Baseball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall head coach Rob Sheppard announced today the 2019 baseball schedule, which features at least 54 games, including 18 BIG EAST contests.
Â
The Pirates' schedule will however, look dramatically different in 2019 since no games will be played at Owen T. Carroll Field. Major renovations to the historic field will be ongoing throughout the 2019 season, so all nine BIG EAST "home" games and all non-conference contests will be played away from Seton Hall.Â
Â
 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
To begin the 2019 campaign, Seton Hall will travel to Port Charlotte, Fla. for a three-game series with Big Ten power Ohio State, Feb. 15-17. The Buckeyes are coming off a 36-24 record in 2018 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. Ohio State's season came to an end with a pair of losses in the Greenville Regional against South Carolina and UNC Wilmington. Seton Hall is 4-5 all-time against the Buckeyes. The last time the teams played was also in Port Charlotte as part of the Snowbird Classic in 2016. Ohio State came out on top, 9-3. The teams have never played a three-game series.
Â
 UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON
The following weekend, the Pirates will travel to Cary, N.C. to take on Dayton for their second straight neutral site three-game series. The Flyers finished the 2018 season with four straight victories, but they did not qualify for the post-season, compiling a final overall record of 21-31. Seton Hall is 2-0 all-time against Dayton, but the teams haven't squared off since 1983.
Â
 UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
On March 1, Seton Hall will begin a three-game series at ACC power Virginia in Charlottesville. Historically regarded as one of the nation's top teams each year, the Cavaliers are coming off their first season in the last 15 years in which they didn't qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They're only four seasons removed from a national championship. Last year, they finished with a final overall record of 29-25, and were unable to advance out of ACC Tournament pool play. Seton Hall and Virginia have a lengthy history, having met 55 times prior. The Pirates are 20-34-1 all-time against the Cavaliers, and fell, 4-1, in their most recent meeting in 2015.
Â
Seton Hall will return to the area for a midweek contest against NJIT on March 5. The Pirates will also play NJIT later in the season on March 26.
Â
 FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
The Hall will then begin its Spring Break trip to Florida, beginning with a three-game series in Miami at Florida International, March 8-10. FIU is coming off a 26-28 season last year, and dropped both of its games in the Conference USA tournament. Seton Hall is only 11-19 all-time against FIU and dropped three of four games when they last traveled to Miami, back in 2016.

The Pirates will then bus their way across the State of Florida back to Port Charlotte for the Snowbird Classic. The Hall will play five games, March 12-17, against four different opponents. They'll face off against Bucknell, Kansas, Saint Joseph's and twice against Harvard. Seton Hall is 6-2 all-time against the four teams combined. The Pirates have never faced Bucknell or Kansas.
Â
After a Tuesday contest at Wagner, the Pirates will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 at Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. The Hall will face both the Hawks and Wagner, for the second time in four days, that afternoon.
Â
 IONA COLLEGE
Seton Hall will play a pair of midweek games at Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, staring with Wednesday, March 27. It will then head to Iona College for a weekend series, March 29-31. The Gaels finished the 2018 season with a 16-31 overall record. The Hall has won 31 of 35 all-time meetings, 10 straight and their most recent contest, a 5-4 victory in 2016.
Â
 VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY
After their second midweek game against FDU, the Pirates will begin the BIG EAST portion of their schedule with a three-game set at Villanova, April 5-7. The Wildcats are coming off a harsh 2018 campaign, finishing with a 9-39 overall record and a 1-17 mark in BIG EAST Conference games. Although the Wildcats lost Second Team All-BIG EAST performer David Gulati and top pitcher Ryan Doty, they return several starters including First Team All-Conference selection Ryan Toohers. This is one of Seton Hall's longest-running rivalries with the teams having played 130 times in history. The Hall owns an 87-43 all-time series lead and has won 13 of the last 15 games, including a three-game sweep at Owen T. Carroll Field last season.
Â
 TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY
Following a pair of midweek contests at Rider and at Princeton, The Hall will travel to Ft. Worth, Texas for a three-game series at Texas Christian, April 12-14. TCU is coming off a strong 33-23 campaign in 2018, but fell one win short of reaching the NCAA Tournament. After winning their first three games, the Horned Frogs fell to Baylor, by one run, in the Big 12 Championship game. Seton Hall and TCU have never met.
Â
 CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY
Seton Hall will play Monmouth in another midweek contest on April 16 before hosting Creighton for a three-game series, April 18-20, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, N.Y. The ballpark is the home for the Staten Island Yankees, the NY-Penn League affiliate of the New York Yankees, and for Wagner College baseball. For the first time since joining the BIG EAST, Creighton did not qualify for the BIG EAST Championship in 2018. The Bluejays finished with a 34-16 overall record, but just an 8-9 mark in conference play. Seton Hall is just 6-14 all-time against Creighton, but the Pirates won last season's series in Omaha. Creighton lost Second Team All-American pitcher Ryan Tapani and catcher Michael Emodi, but returns First Team All-Conference selections Will Robertson and Ryan Mantle.
Â
 BUTLER UNIVERSITY
After a midweek game at the University of Pennsylvania on April 24, The Hall will host Butler at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y., April 26-28, on the campus of St. John's University. Butler earned the No. 3 seed in last season's BIG EAST Championship and finished with a 34-20 overall record and a 9-8 mark in conference play. Seton Hall owns a 10-7 all-time series lead against Butler, and won four of five meetings against the Bulldogs last season. The Hall swept Butler during the regular season in Indianapolis. The Pirates opened the 2018 BIG EAST Championship with a 13 inning loss to the Bulldogs, but rallied to oust them from the double-elimination tournament two days later. Graduation was not kind to Butler as they lost four All-BIG EAST performers, Tyler Houston, Michael Hartnagel, Gehrig Parker and Garrett Christman, but they do return top pitcher Ryan Pepiot.
Â
 XAVIER UNIVERSITY
The Hall will play two midweek games at Saint Peters and at Lafayette, before beginning a three-game series in Cincinnati against Xavier, May 3-5. After winning back-to-back BIG EAST titles in 2016 and 2017, the Musketeers took a step back in 2018, not qualifying for the BIG EAST Championship. Xavier finished with a 20-35 overall record and a 7-11 mark in conference play. The teams have played 16 teams prior with each winning eight games. Last season, Xavier won the regular season series at Owen T. Carroll Field. Joe Gellenbeck and Nate Soria graduated, but Xavier didn't lose any impact pitchers. They return ace Conor Grammes and BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Allbry Major.
Â
 GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY
The following weekend, The Hall will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium at St. John's to host Georgetown in a three-game series. The teams will play a single game on May 10 and a doubleheader on May 11. The Hoyas squeaked into the BIG EAST Championship last year, earning the No. 4 seed on a tie-breaker. They finished the season with a 25-30 overall record and an 8-9 mark in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall is 86-27 all-time against Georgetown and has won six straight in the series. Last season, the Pirates swept a regular season doubleheader at Georgetown, and eliminated the Hoyas from the BIG EAST Championship with a tournament record 21 runs (21-5). Georgetown lost a trio of All-BIG EAST Second Team performers, Jake Bernstein, Alex Bernauer and Sammy Stevens, but returns Second Team pitcher Brent Killam.
Â
 ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY
Finally, The Hall will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a third series, May 16-18, but this time will be the road team as it'll face defending BIG EAST Champion St. John's to wrap up the regular season. The Red Storm are coming off a tremendous 2018 season, finishing the season with a 40-17 overall record and 15-3 mark in conference play. They defeated Seton Hall in the winner-take-all championship game of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship for their fourth title in the last nine seasons. St. John's upset Vanderbilt in the NCAA Clemson Regional, but dropped their next two games to end their season. Seton Hall and St. John's met five times in 2018, with St. John's winning two of three games at Owen T. Carroll Field during the regular season. On Championship Sunday of the BIG EAST tournament, the Pirates routed the Red Storm, 19-2, to force a final game, but ultimately fell in the second game of the doubleheader.
Â
St. John's had massive defections due to the draft and graduation, losing six All-BIG EAST performers, including four on the First Team, and BIG EAST Player of the Year John Valente. They do however, return 2016 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Sean Mooney, BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player Jeff Belge and First Team catcher Wyatt Mascarella.
Â
 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
The BIG EAST Championship will return Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio for a second straight year in 2019. The event will be held, May 23-26. Once again, the top four teams in the final BIG EAST regular season standings will qualify to compete, with the winner of the double-elimination tournament gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Seton Hall has qualified for the BIG EAST Championship the last eight years.
