Annapolis, Md. - Sophomore Regina Pitts (Los Angeles, Calif.) outlasted 12 competitors to win the A Singles flight at the 2019 Navy Blue and Gold Invitational, taking the title with a straight-set win over UNC Wilmington's Sarah Merrill on Sunday.
Pitts did not lose a set over the course of her four matches this weekend. She cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Navy's Annalise Klopfer in the first round and took care of Georgetown's Agata Mikos in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-5. She defeated George Mason's Paige La in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-0 to set the stage for her title bout with Merrill. Pitts won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) and then won the second set 7-5 to win the 13-woman A flight.
In B singles, seniors Minja Gligic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Michal Matson (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Hiba El Khalifi (Morocco) all lost their first match but nicely rebounded in the consolation bracket. Gligic ended up defeating both Matson and El Khalifi to win the consolation bracket with Matson placing third.
In C singles, senior Mekelia Erspamer (Long Beach, Calif.) took down Navy's Danika Kahatapitiya in the first round, 6-3, 6-1, before losing to UNC Wilimington's Anna Daniels in the quarterfinals.
