The Pirate baseball program will now play at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball program announced Thursday that its newly renovated baseball field will don the name of the late, great Mike Sheppard, Sr., and will be called Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Upon its scheduled completion prior to the start of the 2020 baseball season, the ballpark will be one of the top baseball facilities in the Northeast and it will honor two of the most important names in Seton Hall and collegiate baseball history.
Sheppard, Sr., a Seton Hall University student-athlete, coach and professor for more than 60 years who passed away on April 7, was a catcher for Carroll's teams in the late 1950s
"It's going to be an honor to play in a facility that bears the name of two Seton Hall baseball legends," head coach Rob Sheppard said. "The program and our players have earned the right to have a first-class facility like this one. We look forward to carrying on the winning tradition of our program at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field!"
The renovations, which started in March of this year, will drastically enhance the fan and student-athlete experience. New additions include revamped seating areas with chairback seating, permanent restrooms, an enclosed press box, new Field Turf and new, standardized dugouts that are similar to those seen at the professional level. Aesthetically, the facility will have a much greater "stadium" feel. A stone façade will enclose all seating areas, and Seton Hall's marks and branding will be highly visible.
For 31 years, Sheppard served as the University's head coach, 1973-2003, recording 28 winning seasons and 27 postseason berths, highlighted by 15 BIG EAST Tournament appearances. He was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1987, and 1989), and guided the Pirates to the conference tournament title in 1987. Sheppard's squads reached the NCAA Tournament 12 times, and he led Seton Hall to appearances in the College World Series in 1974 and 1975. He was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 2011.
Carroll coached the Pirates from 1948 to 1972, compiling a record of 341-185-6 and leading the Pirates to the College World Series in 1964 and 1971. In his first season as head coach, Carroll led The Hall to a 13-1-1 record for a .900 winning percentage. His best season came in 1965 when he guided the Pirates to the program's first-ever 25 win season. Carroll was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Seton Hall baseball's annual First Pitch Dinner will be held in Bethany Hall on Friday, Jan. 24. A registration link will be made available soon. For more information, call Michael Engemann at (973) 275-6445.
